Since time immemorial, western Asturias has witnessed the unique lifestyle of the vaqueiros de alzada (Spanish nomadic peoples in the mountains of Asturias). They were born in the ‘brañas’ (high-mountain grazing pastures) and lived by raising cattle. Migration was their livelihood. So every summer they took their dwellings to the high mountains in search of the best pastures for their cattle.
They have always been the guardians of the mountains of Asturias and, in a perfect sustainable circle, the nomads lived to care for their animals and from caring for animals they lived.
